Healesville Sanctuary is about 65 km from Melbourne. It is very much like a zoo back home except that for the most part there are no real barriers between you and the non-carnivorous animals. There is a rope that separates you from the animals but the animals are free to come on your side of the rope.
The animals generally kept their distance with the exception of the pelicans. You kept your distance from them. If you got too close they would snap that very big beak at you. Anyone with brains would back off after being snapped at by one of those beaks.
It feels very different walking through an area where the kangaroos, emus, wallabies, etc. are a couple feet away and there is only a rope in between them and you.
